Achievements
1 . Discovered the pathway of synthesis of long chain fatly acids, which are the main components of fat.
2. Identified malonyl-coA as an intermediate in fatfy acid synthesis.
3. Uncovered the role of vitamin H (biotin) in fatty acid synthesis.
4. Discovered the role of acyl carrier protein (ACP) as the co-enzyme, and identified the enzymes involved in
fatty acid synthesis in bacteria.
5. Introduced the concept of multifunctional enzymes in biochemistry and delineated the structure and mechanism
of animal fatty acid synthase.
6. Uncovered the presence of two acetyl-coA carboxylases, ACCI and ACC2, and their locations.
7. Found that ACC2 knockout mice show increased fatty acid oxidation, eat more food, weigh less than their wild
type cohorts, breed well, and when fed a high fat, high carbohydrate diet, do not become obese or type 2
diabetics.
MESSAGE To FUTURE GENERATIONS
